Boston Marathon 2011

I made it! I'm so happy to not have injured myself further by completing it too. I started out with my usual plan, and with all of the runners around me, I got no relief from the sun. Absolutely no air flowing in a way that would cool me off. I quickly started running at 190bpm for 7:00 pace. When my hamstring started talking to me around mile 10, I started to evaluate what I really wanted to do for the day. After attempting a couple more miles closer to marathon pace, I decided to back off and try to enjoy the race. I walked more in this marathon, than all but the first one I did in 2001. It wasn't because I was tired or cramping, it was all just to give my hamstring a break.

The KT Tape seemed to do its job well, as I could still walk mostly normal after the race.

The course was lined from start to finish with people screaming and making noise. I could not believe the amount of noise coming from the girls at Wellesley. A mile after passing them, I could still hear them! I also nearly took a header when a guy dove in front of me to kiss one of the girls.

The only part of this race that annoyed me was the finish chute. The logistics of the med tent were that if you went to get water (which I needed) you could not go back to the med tent without being wheeled there. Once the girl said she couldn't get me an ice pack without getting wheeled back, and offered to get me an IV (since I was a little nauseous), I decided to keep walking. This is where Eric B. found me. We walked up to the Gatorade tent and I asked if I could have some ice from the cooler, and they gladly gave me some. It took far too long for us get food and water. At least we got to take a picture together at the finish.

It's a good race, and I may want to do it again in the future... just not sure I liked being around so many runners. I never really could get into my own race (before I slowed it down)

Thanks all for your encouragement and support!
